Background

Assesses how complete ligamentum teres (LT) tears influence outcomes after hip arthroscopy for FAI and labral tears.

Methods

18 patients with complete LT tears matched to 54 controls; outcomes assessed with multiple PROs and THA conversion rates.

Key Findings

  • LT tear patients improved significantly but less than controls, especially on sport-specific outcomes.
  • LT tear patients had a 3x higher risk of conversion to THA.

Conclusions

Complete LT tears predict higher likelihood of future THA despite symptomatic improvements.

What Does This Mean for Providers?

  • Complete LT tears should be considered a negative prognostic factor when counseling patients.
  • Inform patients of increased risk for joint failure and need for THA despite initial symptomatic relief.
  • Incorporate LT status into surgical decision-making and long-term follow-up planning.
